Pauline has given Arts Workshops in schools and colleges. Her aim is to involve young people in art and the natural world through making artwork.

I always find it great fun letting the children help me make a twig bird by adding extra twigs, leaves, bark etc. However what I really get pleasure from in school workshops is watching the kids make their own twig birds, they always end up so amazingly imaginative and creative.

I usually get the children to look through many pictures of birds to see which type they wish to make. I then ask them to draw a picture of their chosen bird as this seems to get the creative juices flowing. I then supply an armature, which is usually a metal kitchen roll stand and some plastic ties to tie the twigs to the armature.

On top of a huge plastic sheet I tip twigs, bark, leaves, dried vegetables such as corn on the cob which make for great large beaks, nuts and berries, good for eyes, grasses for filling in, dried carrots and garlic cloves for bird talons etc., then just let the little artists go riot with all the 'stuff' that is on the sheet, with the odd bit of help where necessary.
